In this episode, Ryan’s buddy Mike Paolillo describes the benefits of a plant-based diet for treating and preventing cardiovascular disease.
Vegetarian diets can meet nutritional needs for everyone according to the American Dietic Association. No need for ‘animal protein.’
Figure 1 shows a coronary artery opening up after 3 weeks of plant-based diet. Figure 2 shows the left anterior descending artery greatly expanding blood flow after 32 months of diet. In addition, there were markedly fewer heart attacks and other blood occlusions in the patients adhering to a plant-based diet. Check out the paper if you’re interested in the effectiveness of this treatment.
Apparently the treatment is catching on with physicians across the country, despite some of the diet obfuscation that we discuss in the podcast. One of the main concerns of physicians is whether they can actually convince their patients to switch to a radically new diet. In the case of severe cardiovascular disease, patients do have a much greater incentive to undergo such a dramatic lifestyle change. In the Esselstyn study above, 89% of his patients were able to adhere to the strict diet.
Ryan’s Butternut Squash Soup:
- 1 butternut squash
- 1 large sweet potato
- 2 apples (I like Fuji or Granny Smith for this)
- 1/2 onion
- 3/4 cubic inch of ginger
- 1-2 chilies (I like poblano here)
- Cream/soy milk/yogurt
- Spices to taste (I like cinnamon, allspice, curry, and pepper
Pre-roast (350 or just half an hour; or just microwave for 6-9 minutes–I do the latter) and dice the squash and sweet potatoes. Dice the apples, onion, chilli, and ginger. Toss the lot of it in some oil in a pot on medium-high heat. Cook until everything starts to sweat, about 5 minutes. Add water until it just covers the top of the mass of veggies. Simmer for about 20 minutes. Blend, add spice and creamy agent of your choice to taste. Garnish with roasted squash seeds or oats, or with yogurt on top instead of your creamer agent.
